Doveil: A Masterpiece of Abstract Design

David Lee's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Piet Mondrian

David Lee's Doveil, an experience center that draws inspiration from the "pure abstract" design concept of art master Piet Mondrian, is a testament to the power of simplicity and depth in design. This article explores the unique features, design process, and the accolades that this project has garnered.

David Lee's Doveil is not just an experience center; it is a manifestation of brand spirit and values. The design team, led by Lee and Wenqiang Xu, has created a space that perfectly fits the product, upholding the design concept of minimalism and regression to essence. The project, which covers a total of 800 square meters, is a testament to the pursuit of perfection and ingenuity in design.

The inspiration for Doveil comes from the "pure abstract" design concept by art master Piet Mondrian. The red, blue, and yellow grid painting, which appears simple but is full of mystery, served as a blueprint for the project. The design team aimed to create a space with great depth and rich layers, similar to the substance, brushwork, and texture that make up the life of Mondrian's painting.

The realization of Doveil involved the use of exquisite and quiet natural rock slab to design display props and space decoration. This gave the space design more possibilities, much like Mondrian's "red, yellow, and blue grid" interspersed with black lines, which connected the space in series. The design team also created a seven-meter-high void at the entrance to the exhibition hall, pushing the space upward to make it full of momentum and ritual.

Despite structural challenges, such as a crossbeam in the mid-air of the front hall, the designers chose to respect the space's original structure and display it naked, keeping it straightforward and full of strength. The display area is elevated as the boundary of the space, which is staggered with the front hall to create a varied spatial experience. The linear light belt on the ceiling connects the spaces in series, enhancing the echo between the spaces and making them more harmonious.

The project, which started in March 2019 in Xiamen and finished in June 2019, has received significant recognition in the design world. It was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

David Lee's Doveil is a testament to the power of simplicity and depth in design. It is a space that not only serves its function as an experience center but also stands as a work of art, embodying the brand's spirit and values. The project's success and recognition are a testament to the design team's dedication to perfection and ingenuity.
